European Commission publishes the 2026 State of the Digital Decade Report

On 17 June 2026, the European Commission published the fourth State of the Digital Decade report, presenting the progress made towards the EU's digital targets for 2030 and the areas where further action is still needed.

The report looks at Europe's digital transformation across key areas, including digital infrastructures, the digitalisation of businesses and public services, digital skills, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity. This year's edition also identifies priority reforms and investments at EU and Member State level to support further progress towards the 2030 targets.

According to the report, 96.8% of EU households now have basic 5G coverage, while the use of advanced digital technologies by European businesses continues to grow. Nearly 20% of EU enterprises use AI, following a significant increase in adoption during 2025. More than 60% of Europeans also have at least basic digital skills.

At the same time, important gaps remain. Despite progress in cybersecurity, Europe continues to depend on non-EU cybersecurity suppliers, while European companies remain underrepresented among global cybersecurity leaders. The report also highlights a shortage of ICT specialists, with growing demand in areas such as cybersecurity, cloud security, data management and software development.

Looking ahead, the report highlights the need for greater scale, speed and coordination to close the remaining gaps and achieve the EU's 2030 digital objectives.
