We are looking for a part-time Research Ethics and Data Governance Manager to join and work with K3Y Ltd, a fast-growing SME with a presence in Bulgaria and Greece. As an Ethics and Data Governance Manager in our R&D Department in Sofia, Bulgaria, or in our Business Development & Innovation Department in Thessaloniki, Greece, you will be responsible for overseeing ethical compliance, data-handling practices, and governance frameworks across our research and innovation activities. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to define and monitor ethical requirements, data management plans, intellectual property and data-sharing policies, ensuring full compliance with national and EU regulations. You will be expected to work independently, demonstrating strong judgment and the ability to propose robust solutions to ethical, legal, and data-governance challenges. Additionally, you will support and guide project teams on research ethics, GDPR, NISD2 and responsible data use, contribute to policy development and internal procedures, and liaise with legal experts and external stakeholders when needed. You will participate in national and EU-funded projects, leading ethics-, data protection, and compliance-related tasks and work packages to support the successful delivery of our projects.

 

Responsibilities

Define, implement, and monitor research ethics, data governance, and intellectual property (IPR) frameworks across research and innovation activities, ensuring compliance with national and EU regulations.

- Collaborate with researchers, project managers, technical teams, and external stakeholders to identify ethical, legal, and data-handling requirements and translate them into clear policies, procedures, and project deliverables.

Prepare, review, and maintain ethics documentation, data management plans (DMPs), consent forms, and compliance reports in line with GDPR, research ethics guidelines, and funding requirements.

- Provide guidance and training to project teams on research ethics, data protection, responsible data use, and intellectual property rights, fostering a culture of compliance and accountability.

Review project activities to identify ethical, legal, and data-related risks, propose mitigation measures, and support their effective implementation throughout the project lifecycle.

- Liaise with legal advisors, ethics committees, data protection officers, and funding bodies to address compliance issues and support audits, reviews, and reporting obligations.

- Participate in national and EU-funded projects by leading ethics-, data protection-, and IPR-related tasks and work packages in close collaboration with the Research & Development (R&D) team.

 

Required Qualifications & Experience

- Bachelor’s degree in law, ethics, social sciences, information management, data protection, or a related field (Master’s degree considered an asset).

- 2+ years of professional experience in research ethics, data governance, legal compliance, or a related role.

- Strong understanding of research ethics principles, data protection regulations (e.g., GDPR), and intellectual property rights (IPR).

- Experience in preparing and reviewing ethics documentation, data management plans (DMPs), and compliance reports for research or innovation projects.

- Familiarity with national and EU research and innovation frameworks, including ethics requirements in EU-funded programmes.

- Excellent communication and presentation skills in English language.

- Highly organised, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple tasks, deadlines, and stakeholders effectively.

- Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and propose practical solutions to ethical, legal, and data-handling challenges.

 

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

- 5+ years of professional experience in research ethics, data protection, legal compliance, or governance roles, preferably within research, innovation, or technology-driven environments.

- Master’s degree or PhD in law, ethics, data protection, information governance, or a related field.

- In-depth knowledge of EU research and innovation frameworks, including Horizon Europe ethics requirements, GDPR implementation in research contexts, and intellectual property rights (IPR).

- Proven experience in leading ethics, data governance, or compliance tasks within national or EU-funded research projects.

- Familiarity with emerging technologies (e.g. AI, big data, IoT) and their ethical, legal, and societal implications.

- Experience in drafting and negotiating data-sharing agreements, consent frameworks, and IP-related documentation.

- Ability to independently design, manage, and deliver ethics and data-governance activities from project initiation to completion.

- Strong collaboration, communication, and stakeholder-management skills, with flexibility to operate in multidisciplinary and fast-paced environments.
