AI Research Engineer

We are looking for a full-time AI Research Engineer to join K3Y Ltd, a fast-growing SME with presence in Bulgaria and Greece. As a full-time AI Research Engineer in our R&D Department in Sofia, Bulgaria or in our Business Development & Innovation Department in Thessaloniki, Greece, you will design, develop, and deploy advanced AI/ML solutions within the EU-funded projects K3Y participates in. You will ensure the timely delivery of high-quality AI models, prototypes, and technical outputs, while collaborating closely with R&D personnel and external project partners. You will conduct applied research and implementation activities, contributing original ideas, methodologies, architectures, and results across various domains. You will also actively explore emerging and innovative directions in AI research, pushing the boundaries of current solutions adopted in the projects. Finally, you will represent the company in consortium meetings, workshops, and EU project reviews, while participating in internal and plenary meetings, demonstration meetings, workshops and conferences, where appropriate.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and deploy end-to-end AI/ML solutions aligned with project requirements and research objectives.
- Process complex datasets, build analytics pipelines, and apply advanced statistical and ML modelling techniques.
- Engineer, train, fine-tune, and optimize ML/DL models with a focus on explainability and performance
- Apply MLOps and software engineering best practices (CI/CD, testing, scalable deployments).
- Actively explore and experiment with emerging and innovative AI research directions, contributing novel ideas to ongoing and future projects.
- Author technical and research documentation.
- Lead and coordinate project planning, milestone tracking, and cross-team communication.
- Represent the company at project meetings, conferences, and partner events.
Basic Qualifications
- BSc or/and MSc in Computer Science, Engineering, ICT or related fields.
- Advanced Python programming coding skills; experience with testing frameworks (e.g. Pytest).
- Advanced and deep understanding of machine learning, artificial intelligence, algorithms, and knowledge of the latest developments in AI.
- Proficiency in ML tracking/monitoring tools (MLflow, Grafana) and LLM frameworks (LangChain, LangGraph, Hugging Face).
- Solid knowledge of version control (GitHub/GitLab), CI/CD, Docker, FastAPI, and Kubernetes/Kubeflow for serving ML solutions at scale.
- Experience training models on GPU infrastructure (SSH access) and distributed computing environments.
- Strong problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills across technical and non-technical contexts.
- Ability to adjust across different tasks and domains.
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in scientific or engineering field, preferably in computer science, electrical engineering or ICT.
- Experience in working with EU-funded projects.
- Experience with databases, SQL and NoSQL.
- Knowledge of full-stack development for web services.
- Expertise in data protection techniques including encryption, anonymization, and compliance with regulatory standards (GDPR).
